Marginal Utility is pleased to present Bone Dry, a collaborative exhibition by longtime friends Mariel Capanna and Lucia Thomé.
Considering a wide range of burial traditions, post-funeral rites and grieving practices, Capanna and Thomé have created an installation that draws upon elements of material culture closely associated with rituals of death and mourning: the cast figures of the banqueting dead on lids of Etruscan sarcophagi, the friendly faces of cartoon ghosts, the relic of the family photograph, the offering of graveside flowers.
Bone Dry is an attempt to acknowledge the ways that these objects — the conditions under which they are conceived and the transformative physical processes by which they are made and reproduced — give form to our continued relationship with the dead, and create the opportunity to integrate personal grief into the collaborative work of a light-hearted friendship.
